Frequently Asked Questions

Who can apply to this program?

The MDA internship program is for undergraduate, graduate students and graduating seniors who wish to gain valuable work experience while helping to improve the lives of the hundreds of thousands of people affected by neuromuscular diseases.

Are there other internships available throughout the year?

No, MDA’s internship program is strictly a summer program. There are, however, volunteer opportunities throughout the year with most MDA local offices. For more information, visit www.mda.org.

Is the internship salary negotiable?

No, the internship salaries start at $350/week. Positions in New York, Boston, San Francisco and Los Angeles pay $400/week.

What are normal work hours for MDA Interns?

The internship positions are based on a 35 hour work week. Typical work hours are from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

How are the interviews conducted?

Since we receive applications from all over the country, most first interviews with the national office are completed via telephone during the application process. For the second interview, if the applicant resides near the desired placement location, an in-person interview will be scheduled. Otherwise, the second interview also will be a telephone interview.

What is a typical workday like for the interns?

Each intern will have a variety of projects to coordinate and complete. It’s important that the interns learn how to multi-task as they often will be juggling several projects per day. Interns will spend time writing press releases, distributing them to local media, making follow-up phone calls, working on PSA placements with local media and advertising avenues, pitching stories to editors, and working with local companies on programs and Telethon promotions. There also will be a fair amount of research on possible media opportunities.

Does MDA provide housing or assist with housing?

No, MDA has no official housing recommendations for living in the internship cities. We encourage applicants to consider their own personal and financial situations before deciding on the internship city.

Is there an official start date for the internship?

While there’s no official start date, applicants must work for no less than a 12-week period and no more than 16 weeks throughout the summer between May 19 and Sept. 5, 2008.

Is there a dress code?

Yes. Applicants must present themselves as professional at all times in the course of MDA business. In this regard, professional attire and grooming that’s appropriate in typical office settings, at business meetings and at MDA special events is required.

Are there full-time career opportunities with MDA available after the internship?

Interns are welcomed to apply for MDA positions for which they qualify when the internship ends. Every year, interns move into permanent positions with MDA. To this day, we have interns from years ago in leadership positions within the Association.

Why should I apply for the Muscular Dystrophy Association internship program?

This is a rich opportunity to build a professional portfolio. Successful candidates will write press releases and media alerts, pitch stories and build relationships with local and national news media. The Regional Public Affairs Coordinator also will be responsible for local fundraising event promotions, and will gain experience in copywriting and placing stories with print and broadcast media. Promotional activities conducted by each coordinator will make an immediate difference in the lives of Americans living with neuromuscular diseases, while fostering skills that will transfer to any corporate work environment.
